Your Hometown Acupuncturist
From the United States Naval Academy to Chinese Medicine. An Unexpected Journey.
I never planned on becoming an acupuncturist.
I graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2015, where I majored in Chinese. During my studies, I spent seven months living in China, immersing myself in the language, culture, and traditions.
Before arriving, I made a strict pledge: No English. Breaking that pledge meant being sent home. For seven months, I committed myself to experiencing China through its language and people rather than through the comfort of my own.
It was during this time that I first encountered traditional Chinese medicine, an approach to health that would eventually change the course of my life.
After graduation, I served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. With dreams of reaching the upper echelons of corporate America, I began preparing for the next chapter of my career, including applying to Harvard Business School.
But life had other plans.
My health began to deteriorate. Fast. What I had envisioned as a future of professional achievement became a daily struggle with chronic pain and physical limitations. Eventually, my health forced me to leave the Navy and reconsider everything I thought my future would look like.
I found myself returning to something I had encountered years earlier in China.
Traditional Chinese medicine.
Only this time, I wasn't studying it as part of a language or cultural immersion program. I was approaching it as a patient, searching for answers and a better understanding of my own health. In my case, it literally felt like a difference between life and death.
That journey ultimately led me to earn my Master of Acupuncture, achieve national board certification through the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (NCBAHM), and become a licensed acupuncturist in Maryland. I'm currently completing my Doctorate in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, further advancing my clinical expertise and commitment to providing exceptional, individualized patient care.
Today, Hometown Acupuncture represents the intersection of those experiences.
My military background taught me discipline, precision, and attention to detail. My personal health journey taught me the importance of compassion, listening, and treating the person rather than simply the symptoms.
It's also why I've chosen to build Hometown differently.
